Using the Eldercare Locator

The Eldercare Locator connects you to local resources including Adult Protective Services, Long-Term Care Ombudsman programs, and community services for older adults. Call 1-800-677-1116 Monday through Friday, 9am–8pm Eastern time. You can also search online at eldercare.acl.gov.

Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program

If the abuse is occurring in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or other long-term care setting, contact your state's Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Ombudsmen are independent advocates who investigate complaints and protect the rights of long-term care residents.

What to Expect When You Report

  1. 1

    Initial Contact

APS or the Eldercare Locator will gather basic information about the situation, the person affected, and the type of abuse suspected.

  2. 2

    Investigation

APS will typically conduct a home visit to assess the situation. They work with the older adult — not against them — to understand the circumstances.

  3. 3

    Response

APS can connect the person to services, pursue protective orders, or refer to law enforcement depending on the situation and the older adult's wishes.

What APS Investigates

Adult Protective Services investigates reports of: physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, financial exploitation, neglect (by a caregiver), self-neglect, and abandonment. APS has authority to investigate in home settings; the LTCOP covers facility settings.
